help!

im new to plumbing so be easy on me!

i succesfully replaced a bedroom radiator by isolating the old one at the valves and replaced with a new one.

the problem now is that a leak has sprung from below the valve on the water intake side. ie the valve has become loose from the pipe and needs retightening or replacing.

im currently draining the system so am able to access the pipework water free. however it has currently taken almost 4 hours.

i turned the water supply off at the mains so there is no water coming into the house. i have no water tanks. i have a boilermate system.

all i want to do is get the water level low enough (ie below 1st floor level) to replace the valve in the bedroom, and i am still draining the system after 4 hours, and 10 buckets later!! should it take this long? no more water is being fed into the boilermate etc.

help

depends on the size of your boilermate, but basically the storage side of it needs emptying, anything from about 25gals up :(
could you not connect a hose pipe to a draincock?

i have been draining the system from a radiator downstairs has a drain valve on it. a hose is attached that has been feeding into a bucket hence why i know how many(!) i thought that i would have drained it all quite quickly but it was really a trickle.

gave up at 5hours and refilled the system (all works) but still have a leaking valve on the bedroom radiator. going to have to call a plumber in.

would freezing the pipes give enough time? all i need to do is replace the valve and olive attached to the pipe on each side of the radiator! i have done this bit before on outside taps and basin pipework.

frustrated.
