dry lining boxes

Depends on the socket. Some now just butt up to the box lip and leave a gap between it and the wall. That doesn't look so nice. 
I have had a good root round in the shed and have found an old dry lining box and it does fit inside the socket. You say it depends on the socket ( i had that in mind two) but when i went to have a look, admittedly only to B&Q and Screwfix all the sockets they had on display at B&Q done the butting up thing. As you say the gap left does not look pretty.
