I have a chalet bungalow with the usual restricted loft height. In the loft there are two cold water storage tanks at the same level. Both tanks are approximately 1000mm tall, and 800mm x 600mm footprint.

The first tank has a ball cock inlet, feeds to the bathroom, and overflow. The second tank only has a 28mm connection to the first at its base, and overflow.

Is there any reason for there being two tanks like this other than capacity? i.e. I can't see why it would have an impact on pressure. The second tank is in the way of a wall I'm building so I'd like to remove it - but wonder why it's there - am I missing something?

Thanks

Gary

no other reason, and as Steel says second cistern;) will stagnate. So fine to remove it and cap the pipe. re route the overflow to 1st.

This use to be common practice, to increase capacity where there is limited headroom, especially when fitting a power shower

Be careful that there is not a shower connection on the removed CWS

Cheers chaps. The water pressure in the house is pretty dismal anyway so long term ill switch to non vented hot cylinder and then make the cold feeds run at mains pressure too to match.

I'll make sure I have a good look around the tank for hidden feeds. It's easy to miss with all the insulation and such a confined space.

I doubt they put that extra cistern in their nothing as it's only a chalet I'll be surprised if no other supply is coming of it and agree with fireman

There's a booster pump for the upstairs shower room, so you may well be on to something re: the capacity. Which tank it's fed from, I'll let you know...
