DVD volume

Does anyone else experience the same problem as I do when watching a dvd/blueray. Sometimes the sound is so soft that I have the volume on maximum to hear it and other times its blowing the roof off. I've tried adjusting the surround sound countless times but it never seems to get any better.

When a dvd is recorded, shouldn't the engineer make sure that the sound remains reasonably level using those little meter thingys?

I don't seem to have a problem with the old black and white movies.

The soundtracks of the old B&W movies didn't have the dynamic range that modern film has.

If you are listening to a modern movie through an AV amp try using the Dynamic Range Limiter - might be called Night Mode or something similar.
