Electric shower descale

We have a Gainsborough 400X electric shower which is beginning to show signs of scaling up - makes a lot of noise and flow is reduced. The shower head is new and water pressure is good (mains). Has anybody tried descaling inside the heat exchanger ? Which descaler and anything to watch out for ?
