Guys, i must apologise. After this hasn't worked for a few months I've literally just discovered the lamp that was in the light fitting must have been faulty. It didn't light up but when put in another fitting it worked for about 2 minutes then blew along with the fuse. I've put a new bulb in the light fitting connected to the Elkay switch and all is good now.

sounds like one i have, as you have found out, it uses the bulb to function, Mine has to be at least 25 watt, it will not work with Led or any low energy lamps, when the bulb last failed, the display went off
