Hi all,

Recently moved and had new bathroom taps fitted (bath and sink). Thought the guy was a plumber, but turns out he wasn't exactly and he got a bit stressed about the job.

Tap fittings are great but as not all the taps had local valves and the cold water tank stopcocks were seized we had to drain the system (I say we 'cause I ended up helping him rather a lot!). it's a two circuit system with a boiler and a hot water cylinder. Had quite a lot of problems getting the water to run again after refilling the cold water tank but aside form the hot water pressure being lower (which I thought might be the new shower head) all has been okay until now.

Yesterday noticed a wet patch on the ceiling and it looks like the expansion tank has overflowed a bit (the overflow pipe is a bit blocked obviously -need to sort that). I'm guessing this is/ was a blow out from the hot water vent.

I'm pretty new to the whole DIY thing and wonder if in anyone's experience this is related to the recent drain or just the boiler overheating randomly (recently stopped putting the heating on) and best course of action to stop it? It's a pretty old system and the thermostat isn't too accurate -also the boiler casing itself gets quite hot, is that normal? don't really want to call same guy back even though he has a year guarantee...

Hoping this isn't a big job :(

Thank you , Jaclyn.

what tanks overflowing big or the smaller one ?
the heating f/e tank small one has nothing to do with your changing of the taps that water is supplied by the bigger tank.

is the water hot in the tank thats overflowing ?

Sounds like you have a lot of crap in the system, you should get that out asap.

Hi,

Thanks people.

Worked it out. The ball cock of the big tank was wedged up when the taps were being changed because the ingoing stop cock tap was seized and must have got bent. The water in the big tank was just about touching the overflow Overflow pipe had also been knocked off it's cradle so gravity meant it was just backing up on itself and the smaller expansion tank was the first to overflow. Luckily all this was just small drips so we caught it in time.

Feel like I know my plumbing well now, and all this got me out of watching the Royal Wedding with the visiting in-laws
