external front door oil or varnish

Hi,
my carpenter has just about finished fitting my new front door (http://www.howdens.com/product-rang...nal-doors/hardwood-doors/carolina-m-t-glazed/). Its meranti hardwood (i think), with hardwood frame.

Anyone got any good advice on how to protect the door from the elements?
Is varnish the way to go, or does oil protect better? Or is it purely down to aesthetics?

I'd use oil, a lot easier to re apply when the door has weathered abit. Varnish is good but in the long run oil enhance the door and protect it the best.

I've ended up buying some Sadolin wood protect, but will also buy some oil and compare before applying everywhere.

I'd go for oil rather than varnish as well.
