I have an existing outdoor light - but want to add an additional light some 4 metres away. I asked at my local DIY supermarket for external junction boxes and relevant trunking but was told this job now required expert fitting. Is that the case? - if not what materials do I need to add this additional light?

Thanks

:D Are you sure they actually worked there and it wasn't a passing electrician touting for trade? :D

You can do the job but it is now notifiable to your local building control.

Have a read of this. Very useful link.

Which DIY supermarket was it? I shall recommend it to my customers!

Thanks Har_vey for this very comprehensive reply - lots of regs to read! It was B&Q and to be fair he did say it came under the new legislation etc and therefore better to get a qualified electrician.

As I understand it, the DIYer can install an external light without notifying as long as there isn't a junction box, so it seems to me that you could loop from one lamp to another.

Someone will tell me if I've got it wrong (no eggspurt)
