I've got softwood cladding surrounding a dormer window on the front of my house and its starting to look really tired, some bits are flaking and the fixings used have rusted on the ends.

Just wondered what would be the best way of treating this?

I was thinking of sanding it all back down and putting on a timber preserver, possibly 2 coats and then a product like Sadolin or Barn Paint to finish to give it more life.

Any ideas?

softwood cladding is not very durable. Shed and Fence stain will look presentable, last several years, and is easy to recoat with no sanding required next time. If you can lay your hands on a jet washer it will probably clean off the old treatment.

I like to use non-rusting fixings such as stainless or brass.
