Extractor fan Position

I believe the regulation is that you just have to have forced ventilation or a window, the fan can be anywhere.
The fan needs to be rated for the appropriate permitted zone. quick google search shows lots if links with pictures to what the zones are http://www.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&rlz=&q=bathroom zones&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi
For example my fan ended up being in (or very near) Zone 1 so I bought a selv fan with the transformer located in the loft, the whole bathroom circuit is also protected by an RCD.

oh, and as you are talking about electrics in the bathroom expect to get "Part P" mentioned to you a few times as well.
