i have just bought a new extractor fan to replace the old one in the bathroom & which i could not get to as it is now boxed in due to the ceiling being lowered (very fashionable i am told). so, i unwire the old one at the junction box & have a live (red), neutral (Black) & an earth coming in from the light switch so as to go on & off as the light does. the inner gubbins of the fan give me a neutral connector, a switched connector & a permenant connector. question is, what the bloody hell do i do with the earth. thought i just had to put red to switched connector, black to neutral & wrap the earth in a wad of insulation tape. but it aint workin & my mate lecki nick is on holiday, again, with the huge wages he gets. help would be greatly appreciated as i told the missus we neednt wait for nick, it was a piece of cake & now the loft space looks like b&q on stock taking day.

It sounds like you have bought a fan with timer to replace one without timer. If you link permanent & switched terminals it should work. Also you need to insulate the bare earth wire with sleeving & tape or wrap it into a safe location.

hey
thanks for that, worked just fine. earth was all tucked up in bed anyway but thanks for the reminder. mind you, its a crap extractor after all that anyway. need a wind tunnel really but hey ho thats homebase 4 U

And at their prices it was an expensive mistake to buy a timed overrun fan if you only wanted a non-timed one...
