The clutch on my Brava was failing to disengage intermittently and stiff in operation.

I replaced the slave cylinder which has cured the failure to disengage. The stiffness remains, however, and not in a good way.

It tends to be worse if the car has not been driven for a few days, as if a moving part is sticking/in need of lubrication and freeing up. It seems to be most noticeable if the engine is off, although I don't think there is servo assistance.

Any ideas?

Vehicle is W reg 2000, 1.25 engine about 80,000 miles.

Thanks for your reply. Since posting I have lubed the release-arm bearing on the outside of the bell-housing. This has freed the movement considerably.

The clutch will need replacing at some stage though. I have never replaced a clutch myself and am in 2 minds whether to DIY, or take to a clutch specialist, as you have to remove the transmission to get at it.

Any comments on the level of difficulty?

Would the thrust bearing etc. be included in the price quoted for a 'new clutch'?

I would be careful about choosing a "clutch specialist", get a few quotes from several places including a friendly local independent garage. When asking for a quote ask what make of clutch they will be fitting, if you intend to keep the car then ask if they will fit a well known make like Borg & Beck, LUK and Valeo. The specialist will probably fit a reconditioned clutch, some are OK and other not so, it's pay your money and take your choice.

You may even be able to buy the clutch kit yourself and take it to a local small garage and get them to fit it. If you do buy it yourself if the seller surcharges you and asks for the old unit back then you are most likely buying re-con parts. As the poster above says It's buyer beware. Best to stick with a brand new make.
PS a clutch kit should contain pressure plate, drive plate & thrust bearing.

Clutch has today started to make clicking noises when depressed. I think thrust bearing is definitely shot. No time to replace clutch myself.

How much should I pay for a garage to do it?
