Finishing hardwood doors

Can anyone advise on what products to use to finish hardwood doors? The manufacturers instructions for the hardwood doors (XL joinery) show one coat of preservative and two coats of finish. My problem is I am not sure what constitutes a preservative and where to get it from! We are looking at a waxed or oiled natural finish.
