Firebird Super Q Boiler 50/82

Hi am new to site and hope that someone can help me with my firebird super q 50/82.
Occasionally it does not cut out when the set temperature is reached and keeps heating and heating. As it does the boiler gets louder and louder. The stats were changed last year but the problem still reoccurs. One night when it was not cutting out i slapped the top of the boiler casing and it stopped. Have I a loose wire or a pump problem. Many many thanks

If its the combi it has a relay under the top of the front facia, this has a permanent live so if it sticks could keep the boiler running.

Dear Tryan, if the advice from JPH/01 does not work try replacing the thermostat as it worked for one and it would seem a common problem with them
