Hi,
Whilst renovating our front room, we opened up the boarded over fireplace. We do not want a working fire, we'll probably remove the flue higher up but we do want an ornamental piece. There is a lintel inside, I was expecting a builders arch.
I'm looking for ideas about fitting and general options what to install. There are existing clay fireballs. I think we need a flat-to-wall type of fire surround. The ones I've seen cast iron and I don't know how secure them to the wall. How do you secure these? Are there any gotchas I should watch out for?
Thanks,
Dermot

What are you wanting in the hole? To leave it open as it is, put a grate inside etc or, open but boarded to be clean and tidy?
The surround, you can buy as wood or mdf and they affix to the wall with rawl-plugs and screws. There's no weight to them at all.
Whatever you do, if you're removing the flue, remember to fit a vent still to let the old chimney breath.
