Hi - just redecorating the back bedroom, and was under strict instructions to remove the horrible halfbrick tiled shelf over the blocked up (tiled) fireplace, which I've now almost done by hitting it very hard with a bolster and lump hammer:

Next question: the tiling looks hideous and in fact is bowing back into what I guess is the original opening for the fireplace - guess it's just tiling over mdf or similar - if I just take all the tiles out, what would be the best way to recover the opening for painting? I was thinking some kind of studwork frame with plasterboard then skim. Any tips for getting it level with the existing plaster?
Also, is there and risk of structural movement from removing the other half of the bricks that made up the shelf to get a clean opening to cover up? (they are set at right angles sticking out of the wall) Can I assume that they will have been put in under the original brick arch and so have nothing to do with supporting the chimney?
