I have just pulled out an old 1980s fireplace from the front room in my victorian terrace.
I am hoping to light the occasional fire using a firebasket with a built in back plate. I will buy a wooden mantel which surround the opening, and maybe tile or plaster over any exposed tile around the opening.
I have two issues.
1. The brick arch seems a bit damaged. There is no metal support bar, not sure if there is meant to be one. I am looking for an easy way to fix this.
2. At the back of the fireplace, there is no solid base, just ash\dust going down at least a foot. I've had the floor boards up in the same room, and the ground sits about a foot below them. Should there be some kind of base here that someone has ripped out during the past years? Not sure how to fix it, fill it with concrete?
