Your question about light, yes they would as it would assist them.
PIR lighting is a double edged sword, it allows them to see what they are doing. Even worse is dawn to dusk lighting.

Low hedges are good, privet hedges to guide away from windows and doors if possible. If you have a concealed access point block it off if possible.

Pyracantha is better, more chance of them hurting themselves if disturbed and have to run through it. :LOL:

Look it up, evil thorns and the tips break off under the skin, a right bu**** to get out, hurts for days.

Looks good too, evergreen and birds love the berries.

Best hedge / fence ever. :D

I couldn't agree more. But I cannot imagine anybody running through an established pyracantha hedge. Ouchhhhhhhhhhhhhh :evil:
