hi all,
im looking for a bit of guidance on the ford escort encore 97.

for a while now the car has seemed to have a problem of lack of power like the clutch was slipping. had cluctch changed but problem continued inimitantly, the fault developed a bit more and seemed like it was missing every now and again, now the fault more where the car breaks down.

the symptoms are as follows

on tick over no fault apparent ticks over fine
during transint engine misses bounces around
on attempt to restart engien fails bubbles abit as it trys but fails to start.

on leaving the car to settle engien restart and ticks over fine again.

as for info purposes, car had exhaust replaced some years ago, mechanic put oxy sensor in vice to undo it instead of puting exhuast in vice after which the symptom of lack of power first occured.

been to garage who found a fuel leek blamed that and repaired it but car broke down following day, garage wants it on machine but fault lays in transit and ticks overs fine so machine proberbly wont pick up on fault.

im thinking oxy sensor but need proffesional opinions first as the car is now turning into a money pit.

cheers

I would suggest that any test that the mechanic makes will need to be conducted with the vehicle under load ie on a rolling road. Meanwhile you could try replacing the HT leads, the rotor arm, distributor cap and air filter. Even if this does not resolve the problem the parts should be relatively inexpensive and, in anycase, are service items.

Good luck. ;)

ht leads replaced weeks earlier than the breakdown ignition is electronic so not rota arm.

Coil pack failure shows up with the management lamp lit on the dash - together with a constant misfire. You could have a fuel starvation problem so it would be a good idea to put a new fuel filter on, but we don't know the state of the cars service history..... If you suspect the lambda sensor, unscrew it from the cat and see if power comes back - its a good test for a blocked exhaust too. Cheers John

can that test be done by disconection of the electrics at the block terminal to the lambda sensor???

will check fuel filter.
i think its exhaust end as once the car is left to settle it restarts fien but doesnt when car has been driven there is no back fire but doest fire on all cylinders.

forgot to add no warning lamps illuminated

cheers
