When I woke up this mornng all of the power to the house sockets etc was off. I checked the CU and the RCD had tripped and it continued tripping when I tried to reset it.

There were no obvious faults anywhere so I unpulgged all of the appliances, reset the RCD then plugged things back in one by one. Everything came back on but the freeview recorder which was completely dead.

I've tried it in a diffrent socket and tried replacing the fuse in the plug but its still dead.

Other appliances work in the same socket no problem.

What's likely to have caused the fault? I'm assuning the recorder is more likely to be the cuplrit than a fault on the mains?

Other than keeping an eye on things do I need to do anything specific?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers EFLImpudence,

Do you know what within the recorder is likely to cause such a fault? I thought the RCD protects against faults with the earth and assumed a fault on the box would be more likley to blow a fuse or trip the breaker?

I'm not electrical, just curious :D

Electrical equipment can have earth faults, this why your RCD has tripped, could be number of things within the box or the supply flex or plug.

Not exactly. (to OP - not PBoD)

Very small leaks between Live and Earth (not enough to cause a short circuit) or Neutral and Earth are detected by the RCD which disconnects in case the current was flowing through you.
