Hi all,

I've not done an awful lot of DIY but really want to do this, build some confidence and learn from it....just want to make sure I don't botch it!

My double garage is detached from the house and already has a side door, which I understand is referred to as a personal door. It isn't well fitted and has no security. I have 3 options:
1). Add locks to current & adjust to fit properly
2). Change door and locks
3). Change door and frame and locks (reverse opening at same time)

I've chosen option 3 for a fresh start to make sure frame, door and everything is fitted right from the start & also take the opportunity to reverse the opening - it currently options inwards but want to open outwards so as not to restrict garage usage. It will stay with hinges on right so believe this is right hand.

I have a sill already so was wondering whether that could be re-used, even though door will open opposite way?

I understand eBay can be quite good for doors, although I haven't found much. I'm looking to keep the cost down. Could you advise on the following items (and any links to ebay/screwfix) and anything else I will need to buy or consider please?

  • Solid hardwood door with threshold
    Frame
Yale BS mortice lock 5 lever
    Heavy duty hinges x 3
    Treatment/paint
    Wood frame shims
    Fixings (screws/nails/size?)
    Door knob/handle?

I've included some pictures for what I have currently & also a diagram with measurements.

Look forward to your help for getting me stuck in!!

Many thanks,
Kieren :)

FYI I was quoted £380 for supply & fit for option 3, not including painting/treatment.[/list]

If it's external, which I assume it is, you should be looking at hardwood door and frame. Haven't looked at your pic's but an external frame will come with threshold fitted, just make sure you choose an opening in frame!! Select a door to suit your new frame and away you go! Good luck with it.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. It's a bit daunting, having not done anything like this before but hopefully with the right planning can do it right!! :)

Could someone give some advice regarding measurements I have given - what size frame & door I should be looking at please? Also any links to decent priced frames & doors would be most appreciated.

The measurements show at a plinth at the top - not sure if that should stay or a frame that is taller?
Note: the height is down to the wooden step presuming that would stay there?? Height doesn't include to brick below the step.

Roughly how many hours do you think it will take considering not done it before & limited DIY exp?

Many thanks,
Kieren
