We have a gate that is an access point to a shared alley way that runs between our house and a neighbour. The gate itself sits within the boundaries of our property according to the deed and Land Registry. It forms the primary but not sole access to the shared alley.

As this falls within our boundary we assume we would be responsible for maintaining the gate. Can we remove it?

If it is within your boundary, and your neighbour can access the alley via another entrance, then the gate is yours and you can do as you wish with it.
Photo's would help to give a clearer picture, (no pun intended), but from what you have told us I think you own it.

Are you sure that it isn’t a shared access?
Ie the hinge may be on your side, but the locking side on theirs?
They could be entitled to a say in it being retained?

if your objection is only about maintenance, would the neighbour take over?

Why do you want to remove what will be a security feature?

Removal as in blocking the entrance up? No you would denying the easement over your land and your neighbour would be entitled to compensation.
