I'd consider due to application (gravity feed from loft) that a ball would work OK - and to be honest - I wouldn't know a good brand of gate valve vs a bad one.

You would when they asked for your cash!!

You can tell just by looking and feeling - discriminate in the way that you would the quality of any manufactured item.

For example, cheap GVs have the kind of tinny handle that you can bend with your bare hands, and that can open up around the square on the spindle when the valve seizes. Expensive ones have cast handles that boldly state "I'm going to stay this shape for ever".
