Philip Hammond is not going to China this weekend for trade talks, following reports that Beijing scuppered advanced preparations for a meeting after the defence secretary, Gavin Williamson, threatened to deploy a warship in the Pacific.

The UK chancellor was expected to meet the Chinese vice premier, Hu Chunhua, but Treasury sources said the trip was never confirmed. It is believed that there is an internal row brewing between the Treasury and the defence department over Williamson’s remarks, which the former chancellor George Osborne described as a throwback to an era of “gunboat diplomacy”.

Why was he made defence secretary? So we went from the sexual harassment of Fallon to the national embarrassment of Williamson.

Not trying to be outdone, the pair of idiots Fox & Hunt have soured trade talks with Japan.

The Financial Times cited unnamed officials in Tokyo who reacted with dismay to a letter sent on 8 February in which Hunt, the foreign secretary, and Fox, the international trade secretary, insisted that “time is of the essence” in securing a trade deal with Japan, the world’s third-biggest economy.

Hunt and Fox also called for flexibility on both sides – an approach the paper said had been interpreted as criticism that Japan did not share their desire to quickly conclude a free trade agreement after Britain is scheduled to leave the European Union on 29 March.

To add to Britain’s frustration, Japan has reportedly ruled out simply replicating the terms of a Japan-EU trade agreement that went into effect at the start of this month but which will be unavailable to the UK after Brexit. Instead, it will seek tougher concessions from Britain than it secured from the EU.

But I thought all these 'deals' would be the 'easiest ones in history' to negotiate and countries would be flocking to the door of the UK..

I cant stand Gavin Williamson, no reason, I just find his whole demeanour irritating.

is he as irritating as Owen Jones?.....well its a close run thing :ROFLMAO:

They will be and they will.

Of course the terms to which we will have to agree to get the deals through easily, and to get other countries flocking here to sell or buy are another matter....

Yep, touch your toes and learn to enjoy getting shafted

Poor Theresa is trying to run the country with a second division team.

In order to get to be PM, she had to sell her soul to the devil.

She asked that Conservatives would support her and be intelligent, honest Brexers.

sadly she didn't notice that the devil inserted an "or" into the contract, because it is impossible to find anyone with all those characteristics.

So some tories are intelligent and honest, but not brexers.

some are intelligent brexers, and dishonest

Some are honest brexers, and stupid.

where does Rice-Pudd fit? Gove? Buffoon Johnson? Williamson?
