No cyl stat normally means gravity hot water so I would tend to agree with namsag,blr stat suspect.
When you said about the diverter I assume you knew you had one, but that may have been thrown in to confuse me!--it dont take much!

Found out there is a reset button on the tank (hidden round the back) and sorted it now.

Ah the magic reset button. What does that look like that once pressed stops boiler boiling over and starts pump for hot water that is already working on heating,
In nearly 30 years i have never seen one of those
