Good evening guys and girls. It's been a while since I posted. I have a question regarding cam belts

Do you remove the belt at where the engine stops?
You can’t do that on an engine without a keyed crank, plus, if you don’t lock the cams on a twin cam, they could easily ping out of position when the belt is removed and then you need another pair of hands to hold them in position when you struggle to slip the belt on.

On engines like that, I normally set the crank in position by whatever method is recommended, lock the cam pulleys using my adjustable tool (I do blob them up with tippex in case the tool falls out!), remove and refit the belt. I rarely bother with loosening the cam pulleys and locking the cams using approved method but that’s just my laziness. I used to do that all the time with Zetec Fords but then I started checking it having not gone through the recommended cam locking procedure and found that it always worked out correct. Obviously if I’d had the head off and was starting from scratch, I would.
