I'm presently repairing a chimney where the crown was topped with just ordinary cement. Hence it's present shattered state. I intend to replace this with grano. Unfortunately, none of my local builder's Merchants seem to stock this but in my local BM Bargains store they are selling 10 kg bags of decorative granite ( for ponds and fish tanks) at 3 bags for £3.00. I'd guess the size to be from 6mm to fine particles. Can anyone say if this is likely to be a good substitute.

Many thanks in advance.................Kev

You will probably have sand and cement flaunching not cement.

Yes, use the cheap stone or you could use chippings ( same as the chippings used when dashing renders).

Mix to cement1: sand2: stone3.

After cleaning off the top of the stack use a slurry of S&C to give a key to the brickwork before forming the flaunching.
