Ground cover/cheap plants.

Afternoon chaps,

We're moving house next year, and while I've sorted out the front garden (beech hedgerow and bark chippings), the back is pretty bare.

It's small, with a pond in the middle and a couple of large raised beds made of sleepers. While I've planted a few mints and herbs over the last couple of years, the borders are mostly soil.

Can anyone recommend some cheap plants which I can plant either now or very early next year? I don't really care about flowers - just something to take up some space and make it look a bit more like a garden and less like a topsoil plant.

It's getting late for planting and a lot of places are out of stock but if you look around you can still pick up perennial collections like this. They throw in 100 bulbs too.

its a great time to do cheap and cheerful ground cover plants because you can buy them bare root very cheap.

General amenity shrubs like

lonicera ntida
portugal laurel
cotoneaster varieties like coral beauty, fanchettii
viburnum varieties.

That's great info, thank you. I should have considered that, as it was only a couple of years ago I bought the beech bare-rooted.

Hebes are fairly cheap and will grow to a decent size and there are many varieties. Boot sales are a good place to pick up cheap plants but it's probably a bit late for that now so spring will be a good time if you are still there

Thanks for the tips; I did see plenty at a boot-sale last summer - I should have grabbed some then!
