Heating not coming on

Evening,
Now it’s getting colder I thought I would put the heating on.

The thermostat shows Actual temp 18 degrees and in manual which is how I’ve always used it I rotate the knob to 24 degrees.
After a second or two on the controller I see the flame symbol appears & the word on next to it.
I can hear the boiler making a slight humming sound but don’t see the green flame symbol on the boiler. After a minute it’s still the same.
On my outside wall I have a black pipe which would normally know be showing let’s just say smoke coming out of it “can’t remember correct name” but nothing.

If I turn on hot water the green flame logo now shows and I hear the boiler kick in & smoke now coming out of the black pipe.
If I turn off the hot water after the boiler can be heard to switch off and a short while later the smoke stops.

Confused as to why the control unit shows on but I hear nothing from boiler & radiators are cold to touch.

Your diverter valve is probably stuck in hot water mode.

What can I do to get some heating going.

You will need an engineer I am afraid ,The diverter is inside the boiler ,and only on site investigation can confirm ,it could be other things including the PCB.

Do you have an old timer or thermostat somewhere ?

You could try resetting the boiler, you might be able to temporarily free up the diverter until an engineer arrives. Also answer Ian’s question about an old stat.

B Gas are coming out Thursday.
I don’t have any other stat.

I do remember say 8 years ago I had a stat issue & a member said to join two wires together in that part with green light on next to the boiler.

Will this work in this case ?

I have taken the cover off and see attached photo from what I did last time.

1 + 3 are the black wires.

Can I do this again for it to work ?

put 1+3 joined in the same terminal and put the power back on, if the boiler now works the control stat is goosed

I taken the wire from number 3 terminal & put it with the wire in the number 1 terminal.
I put the cover back on & switched it on at the mains.
At first the green flame light came on & the smoke came out of the black pipe outside.
Then like before the green flame light goes out.

Boiler pressure did not increase & radiators still cold.
Turning up temp on controller to 24 whilst it shows 18 made no difference other than words ON shown like before.
I assume by joining the wires 1 + 3 just get the heating going it controller is bad & would just go to full temp possible.
