Morning all,

I've worked up this morning to a steady leak on the pipework going into my Worcester GreenStar Ri boiler.

Looking at the manual, it seems to be from a valve on the CH return pipe going into the boiler. Attaching a photo. There's a thumb screw on the valve, can anyone tell me what the valve is for? It was slightly open, I've shut it now and the leak seems to have stopped. Should that be open? I'm guessing no. Maybe it's just worked itself loose with vibration from the boiler.

The CH is open vented, so there's no pressure there. There's no a huge amount of water come out so I'm assuming it only started when the CH fired up this morning.

Any pointers appreciated. Dry off, close valve and carry on? :)

Cheers

I’m no expert but that just looks like an air bleed valve cap that’s come loose. Tightening it should solve your problem.

Cheers folks! So should the screw cap on top be closed or open for normal operation? I was assuming it should be closed and air will will be auto released, and it's just allowing you to manually release air if you need to.

Unless you have a real problem with air in the Central heating then they are really only needed when the system is emptied and filled again. If the water is escaping through the small hole in the schrader valve and not the lid itself, then tightening the valve cap down should stop it for now but it does need looked at and replaced.

It should normally be open to allow the air out, automatically. If closed, nothing will come out, air or water.

Cheers...I've closed the cap, dried everything off and fired everything back up. All looks good for now, so i'll leave it as is and get a replacement valve bought. (y)
