Hi

I’m looking for advice. We have had a small GRP roof done covering part of 1 room on the top floor of our house. The roofer was slow to share photos. Can you advise based on photos on if it is a good or bad job? If it is bad is it fixable? If it is fixable how is this done?

Roofer has done previous work for us over a number of years and we have never had a problem before.

Previous roof was not GRP and new Obs 3 boards were installed.

I have not paid for the work yet and want advise before paying.

A roofer with years of experience that has a track record of good work?
Get some money to him so he can enjoy his bank holiday!

My concern is the white patches mean the resin was contaminated or improperly mixed

The pictures don't really show enough detail to be able to give you a definitive answer.
Get a guarantee in writing.

I don't want to worry the OP, but our flat roof was redone in GRP by a total cowboy (don't ask). It didn't leak, but many other things were wrong. He started by fixing tie down straps to the wall inside. Fine, except they were held in with one inch screws with no rawlplugs....Other things, like where the GRP folded over, it wasn't fixed down properly and when the wind blew in a certain direction, it got in the gaps and started lifting. The fall was wrong. Rain would rush like a waterfall over the front wall of the extension and it soaked through to the inside (OK, not all his fault, there were snots in the wall cavity transferring damp to the inner leaf).

His work with the fibreglass was horrendous. And at the end, he gave me a guarantee certificate "backed" by the maker of the materials he had used.

It was supposed to be a warm roof but instead of using adhesive, he put screws through everywhere, so how effective the warm roof is, IDK.

We have since had it recovered with another layer of OSB then topped with rubber and the edges tidied up

All I'm saying is, there is more to it than,

"Does it leak?" !!

Need higher resolution photos to see what you’re seeing. When they installed the roof did it rain or was it low temperature ie below 5?

Catalyst is a clear liquid and as this is the topcoat layer they would/should have mixed it in small portions so if it wasn’t mixed properly it wouldn’t have cured. From the images you’ve uploaded I can’t zoom in to see what these patches are.

Did they do the resin and topcoat in one day or come back the next day to do the topcoat?

Hi these are the only photos the roofer sent unfortunately and I would need scaffolding to get a proper look. They did it in one day starting at 8am. Worked for 6 hours. It was a warm sunny day.

So this could be just muck then. Need better photos to see what it is, but if they did it in one day then there's no chance that they would have put the topcoat down on a dewy surface the next morning and if the sun was shining and it didn't rain then there's no chance of water getting in between the layers and contiminating the cure, that's two big things out of the way.

The next thing would be either if something got in the resin mix somehow, or they didn't put enough catalyst in the mix, which means you would have an uncured roof and it definitely looks cured, so I'm not sure what it is without some more photo resolution.

Thank you this is really helpful. 3 people did the work too and given they have always done an excellent job before I will just have to hope it went okay.

See if the contractor offers a guarantee for the workmanship, the 20+ year manufacturers guarantee tends to only cover the materials in the event that the system is faulty and won’t include any further installation costs.

Thanks. They have provided a 10 year guarantee in writing and I have used their services for around 10 years already so they may actually still be around.

Do you know someone with a drone with decent camera? Could be a way of getting a closer look.
