Hi, first post looking for some advice..

I have a garden (block) wall which had some old render on which was falling apart.
I want to tile it with split face slate tiles, and have removed the old render as much as possible.

Would anyone know the best way to prepare the surface?
I am considering 3 options:
1) apply Mapei primer first then tile
2) skim coat of render then tile
3) 6mm nomoreply backer boards

If possible I'd prefer option 1 (cheap/quick) but wondering whether the wall flatness is ok or not as first time tiling. Or any option I haven't considered.

Advice appreciated! Thanks
