Help Required on Fordham Cistern

I need the help of you knowledgeable folks.

I have a Fordham Flush Panel cistern, the one with the plunger on the top. It flushes okay. However, on the majority of occasions the plunger doesn't rise back up again without the persuasion of a few gentle thumps on the front of the cistern.

What needs doing to get the thing working normally again. Unfortunately replacing the whole cistern is out of the question as we are selling the property.

sounds like something just sticking or not lined up properly
try operating it with the lid off and watching the valve flush
