Hi can anyone tell me what I need to do to prepare the ground in photo to put down grass seed? I want to try match it up with existing grass. The area is roughly 10 foot by 10 foot

Rake off remove any weeds soil up to level off if need be and get a hard wearing grass seed sprinkled over the top and wait, job done

OK when I level up do I need to leave the ground firm or loose when I plant the seeds if that makes sense?

Yes it's grass. It has soil over it and is trampled down so does not look nice at the moment. I don't want anything special anyway. Just grass will do. I have been advised a, hard wearing grass seed. Can anyone recommend one?

Remove any stones, pebbles etc and rake over in both directions, (Front to back then left to right), to loosen the soil and lift any other debris.
Lightly roll flat and level. If required add some more topsoil to bring up to the surrounding level. Roll out flat then lightly rake to provide a fine tilth. Sow grass seeds, (about 30g per sq mtr if I remember correctly), and then lightly rake over a covering of soil to reduce bird wastage.
Water well with a light shower spray and try not to disturb the soil too much or you will wash the seeds away. Keep moist, especially during hot weather, and do not walk on it until the grass has established.
