so they can be scrubbed clean  like we painted a room in a hospital (before you were born  ) with eggshell...........needed oxygen after :x bloody fumes...tried to get kiss of life, but no luck  ...we couldn`t open the windows far, and the next room was padded

Yep id say that too...easier to maintain.

Scare...for extra points you should state that you would subtitute oil based gloss for water based.

Where is that question from by the way?...its not a city and guilds one.

Covering biro marks prior to emulsioning.
Covering nicotene staines, water stains.

Helps to seal decorators caulk prior to emulsioning.

When you have messed up, and applied Matt over silk, and the paint peels and bubbles
Applying a coat of oilbase undercoat over the silk first, then followed with your Matt.

Ohhhh, its good for wood as well.

cool dudes, thats well useful cheers!

it is the city and guilds qualification, not sure which level though, quite a basic course! :D

the main answer they are looking for is "to enable you to apply special finishes ie marbling, ragging, graining easier"

NVQ 2 mate remembered answering the lads one when he bought it home last year. The Book that they are given had all the answers in   none of them read through it though  All the answers above will not get you the marks i.e covering stains should be stain block not U/C, rooms in hospitals should not be painted in oilbase (VOC'S) should be low or nil VOC content to comply with current H&S rules so waterbase only in this day and age. Rusting plasterbeads should be galvanised or the exterior type so will not rust and should not need sealing  marks stains pen etc etc etc all have a special product to cure it and that is what you use. I know its all black and white but thats how it is in college. When he passes he can throw it all out and do what we all do

When client insists that they like it best and insist on having it instead of water base and you've mortgage and council tax to pay.

When you've run out of soft sheen and you've a van load of eggshell off another job.

Its not in the job knowledge questions for the painting unit thats for sure...probably from a company who produce learning materials.
