High Sheen Finish on Iron Fireplace

If you've ever seen old iron fireplaces which have been restored with a high sheen finish as shown below, how is this achieved?

I have heard that a wax metal polish is perhaps used. I presume they use a drilling machine with perhaps some form of shining disc. Would anyone happen to know the specifics of how this is achieved?

I used an angel grinder with wire brush attachment, then polishing disc.

When you say "polishing disc", is this a disc with a rough finish or something more along the lines of a wool/felt finish?
