My daughter lives in a one bed flat that uses Horstmann Electronic 7 to heat water. Does anyone know how long the system needs to be on to provide hot water for a day please? 2 adults live in the flat, so enough water for a couple of showers and a bit of hot water for washing up.

It's highly likely that the flat has electricity supplied at two rates - normal rate and cheap "off peak" rate. The off peak rate is usually around 1/2 the normal rate.

If the above is the case, then the hot water cylinder (HWC) is likely to have two immersion heaters fitted, one near the base and the other about 1/3 down from the top. (There are other configurations possible such as a dual immersion heater). The immersion heaters will be characterised by a tea-cup sized metal or plastic cover sticking out of the cylinder insulation, with a thick cable, usually white, going into the cap.

The idea is to have the bottom heater run off the cheap rate electricity. This power source is usually only available overnight, perhaps between 23:00 and 05:00. It heats the whole contents of the cylinder, probably taking around 3 hours from cold (depends on the size of the cylinder), and this should stay hot for the next day given decent cylinder insulation. Depends on the size of the HWC, but should comfortably provide two showers and the washing up. The top heater is there to boost the hot water if you run out. It can usually be put on for an hour or two, and uses normal rate electricity. It only heats the top third or so of the HWC, but should provide enough hot water for a short to medium length (say 5 to 7 minute) shower and to do the washing up.
