Hot water cylinder

Hi,

Can anyone explain what type of cylinder this is, my mate has just bought an old house and not seen anything like a thermostatic valve on the pipe! Connected to a back boiler. Many thanks

that's a terrible picture.

It isn't a Cyltrol valve, it looks like it might be a Drayton Tapstat. If so it will have a tiny braided flexible tube going to a temperature sensing bulb under the insulation. It is not a wire, so don't cut or kink it.
 
Gravity circulation, indirect cylinder.

No independent or real control over hot water.

Unless I am mistaken, there should be a bypass on the primaries incase that valve closes.


Suggest a professional looks at the system with a view to upgrading it fire both efficency and safety.
