System is [I think] open vented, baxi bermuda back boiler.
Problem arose after gas board changed the meter? He switched off the gas at boiler then relit after meter change but set thermostat control on boiler to max.
Later same day the system vented very hot water out of overflow into the feed and expansion tank resulting in it appearing in bathroom!
Tried turning the boiler stat down to position 2 [where it should have been] but now system will not ignite beyond pilot light unless I put the thermo control to the '0' position then it will boil the system again as the full flame remains constant and doesn't cycle as it did previously -any ideas please?

SOunds like your thermostat has broken because it didn't like being touched. Not the guy's fault, there's no "should have been" about where a thermostat goes, though he might have discussed it with you if he wasn't leaving it in the same place.

There isn't a Gas Board any more, it would have been Transco or their replacement. As such, they aren't qualified to change parts on boilers. You could have a go at them, but it's like turning a light on - if the bulb blows, whose fault is that?

Whoever comes to fix it (at your expense) probably won't carry te part, so ask on the phone if you'll be charged for the time it takes him to get it. A Plumber in Pimlico would charge you £65 + vat for the time they're shopping.

Could perhaps tell who ever you call to bring a boiler stat with them?

Or buy your own then get them to fit it, as long as you get the right one.

Yes but find the EXACT model number for the boiler part and not the fire front. Look on the bottom plate under the fire (ie on the floor). I'm not sure they're all visible. Look for the models on Partsarena.com/baxi . Usually a 552xyz!

Thanks for the input guys, how difficult is it to change? Am reasonably competant mechanic

It involves dismantling gas connections to reach it, so therefore should be left to an RGI to fit.
