Hotpoint Aquarius WF540 dead

Our washing machine has just stopped half way through a wash and the on/off button is now flashing and it won't restart. The pump seems to be running all the time, even as soon as you switch the power on, can't remember if this is normal or not?

Any ideas where to start?
