Hotpoint WMF540UKR programmer knob spins

My washer works OK but the programmer knob now just spins smoothly, does not click or change the programme. I assume that the knob is broken and not turning the programmer spindle. The knob is easy enough to get but as it is 'buried' in the front panel how is this removed to replace it.

Yes very common. Remove the lid and consol panel and knob just pulls off.

Thanks Rocks1, have not had a chance to pull all the appliances out to get to it since my ham fisted son did it. Is it just a couple of screws on the back to remove the top? Does the console panel release easily or do you have to dismantle half the machine?

Yes that's all , consol panel just unclips. You can put a cable tie round the stem of the broken one to get you out of trouble.
