Hi I have a Hotpoint WT540 and the fabric softener cover has vanished but now I have noticed the fabric softener becomes diluted but never drains away, anyone got any ideas how to fix it or should it be like that?

The cover is a vital component of the soap dispenser in terms of fabric softener on this machine. The cover has a tube built into it, which acts a little like a toilet syphon. The softener sits in the draw, and when the water is poured into the softener, the softener goes up the tube and then when it flows over the top, it syphons the rest away into the drum.
Without that, the water will just fill the level of the fabric softener part up until it overflows into the adjacent rinse part and will never fully drain away. It may also spoil your next wash.
