House design software

Is there any free or affordable software that is good to draw up house plans. I want to play around with different ideas and if possible visualise the design in 3D. At a later date I will appoint a professional to do the designs for planning submission. Ideally PC software.

There was an app named Chief Architect for Apple that we used when we designed our extension

You could try the free eTeks Sweet Home 3D. It's rather simplistic, but ok for knocking up a quick layout.
