Is the householder legally aloud to replace his own house thermostat or do you need to get an electrician to replace.

I just want to replace a manual/analogue thermostat to a digital one

Is the same true for light switches

Yes, you can do all of that, no problems, no paperwork, no electrician.
Assuming you feel competent to do it. We'll love to give you help, of course, but do look in the WIKI for guidance first.

As you've been told, you can do it. Just one point to check. Your new digital thermostat is likely need a 3-core (plus earth) cable feeding it (permanent live, switched live and neutral). Although your present one may have that, it's also possible that it only has a 2-core (+earth) cable (no neutral) - which would be a problem. So you ought first to check what cable is connected to your present stat.

and if fitting metal light switches, don't forget to earth them! (you may want to check there is an earth cable at the switches before buying them if its an old house wired in the 60's)

a stat with its own battery can usually be connected to a 2-wire stat circuit

Hi, Drayton and Danfloss manufacture a two wire version which operates on batteries and does not require a neutral connection.

Just fitted one for my mum !

Kind regards,

Indeed (you may recall that we had a long thread about this very recently, in which I even linked to some battery ones) - and that's what I intended to write at the end of my post, but seem to have overlooked writing! - that why I said that he should "first check" whether he had 2 or 3 wires, so that he could determine what sort of new one he needed to get!

Indeed! - see my recent response to OwainDIYer. IIRC it was a Danfloss one I linked to in the recent thread i referred to!
