how soon will Trump back down over tariffs

pmsl.

Did they offer to stop the restrictive trade measures?

What are these?

When it comes to cars, those are imposed by 'Murca itself.

Too big for our roads.
Too thirsty for our fuel prices.
Too "agricultural" for our more refined tastes.
Too unreliable when compared to the Jap and Euro competition.

No idea. Do you want Trump to tell everyone else what their tax regime should be?

VAT is another example. I have finally worked out Trump's thinking on VAT. It is actually very simplistic. It isn't about unfair competition between imports and domestically produced goods in the EU. It is simply about the overall price. Basically, everything else being equal, VAT makes goods the USA is trying to sell in the EU 20% more expensive than goods the EU is trying to sell in the USA. So, Trump argues that this reduces the overall amount of goods that EU consumers buy. And because some of those goods are from the USA, this reduces the amount of US goods sold in the EU. But this ignores the fact that everything else is not equal. If the EU got rid of VAT, they would have to tax income a lot more instead. So, EU consumers would have a lot less money to spend. Which would cancel out the cheaper price from getting rid of VAT in the first place.

The one thing everybody seems to forget is that the EU and the US have a balanced trading arrangement... as services are absent from the orange buffoons calculations.. 2024 goods us trade deficit 176 billion, services EU deficit 168 Billion...

I know. Just another part of the overall ridiculousness!

What are these?

I think it is mainly standards regulations including environmental regulations, like GM stuff, and chlorinated chicken and hormone beef.

Also, Trump's team want the rest of the world to get rid of VAT. I posted a couple of posts back about their thinking on VAT, which pretty much every economist says is nonsense.

did you miss the EU offering zero tariffs at the beginning of the week ?
you are dishonestly trying to imply the EU were offering a unilateral zero tariff.

EU offered a "zero for zero tariff deal"

gas112 has to keep being dishonest because he supports a liar

America buys billions of stuff from China which it cant easily buy elsewhere

Rare Earth Metals being a perfect example

"The U.S. imports 80% of its REEs directly from China, with no domestic processing for heavy rare earths like dysprosium"

poor gas112 more wrong than a wrong thing

Barmy blonds.

Trump and Truss

"...And this is why “liberation day” is the Trump administration’s Liz Truss moment. Like the former UK prime minister’s “mini” Budget in 2022, Trump’s trade policy reveals that the people at the top don’t care if their policies add up, make sense, or will actually work. Belief is all. So as with the market reaction to Truss, which reflected less that she was increasing the deficit than that she was giving up any pretence to reality-based policymaking, the market reaction to Trump has as much to do with the sheer dumbness of how the tariffs were chosen as with the damage they will cause (wherever the tariffs end up)."

Or the digital services tax?
What don’t you like about a digital services tax?

Do you think it’s a bad idea to charge a tax that helps to reduce the unfair advantage that digital services have?
