I had a leak in a lead wastepipe and managed to find the crack buried a foot deep in a concrete wall. I had to remove the cracked section of pipe but left an inch of exposed end free - although it's not in an easy to reach place. This pipe also joins onto the stack about a foot deeper but I'd have to remove a concrete balcony to get to it. Is there any way to join into this exposed lead pipe end with a plastic pipe? Please help as I really don't want to remove my concrete balcony or the rest of the wall!

Sure, McAlpine type compression fitting if you remove the inner tube/guide for 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" sizes, if bigger then those rubber tubes with jubilee cllips whose name I can never remember.

What size is the pipe?

One might have soldered the lead...

Thanks very much for your help. Unfortunately I couldn't get access to solder - besides, the pipe kinda removed itself before i had the chance. Sorry don't have exact sizes but it's about 1 1/2 inch.

Is that a common fitting? Will I find it in a B&Q or Screwfix or do I need to go somewhere more specialist?

Yes - 1.5" is now known as 40mm, and (as ChrisR said) McAlpine multifit fittings are quite accomodating.

See the "Plastic Waste Pipe and Fittings" section here:

They're widely available, but beware of poor quality immitations.
You might have to go to a plumbers' merchant.

Have you got room to fit a 'leadlock' fitting? Available at most main plumbers merchants.

I dont think from previous diagram this is the same fitting. Apologies if it is. You would have to go to a short peice of copper first may be with tis though.

Well it is a Sunday morning after a heavy night, didn't notice the waste pipe bit:oops:

Thanks for pointing that out clf ;)
