Hi all

Relative newbie to carpentry. I gather that a few geometric and mathematical tools are handy in setting out a perpendicular stud wall such as the 3-4-5 rule, or using radii such as suggested here: http://www.fine-woodworking-for-your-home.com/Geometry.html

That's fine, but I want to know what technique a good carpenter would generally use, especially in this situation where I'm sandwiched between two block walls, and an existing studwall, so I don't have the luxury of swinging big arcs with a string line.

See link here to sketch: http://www.thebreadcrumbtrail.org/g...ings_001/Carpentry/MP-Perpendicular-stud-wall

An off cut triangle from a corner of sheet material [ply,mdf.etc.] can be used as a square to aid alignment. [no sketch attached]

These days I use a 360 degree laser which saves a lot of hassle. Alternatively set-out the verticals with a 6ft level and connect between the verticals using a chalk line. Sometimes the fancy maths proposed by some people in magazines is just overkill
