If a tree falls...

I can imagine a very contrived situation where tree fell down in a vacuum and therefore did not make a sound, or all the sound was absorbed before it could be measured...
Unless the sound of tree falling over was measured directly or indirectly, then we can't know, only judge on the basis of probability.
 
Its a wave in the air, nothing more, just like a wave in the sea. It is only when there is an ear can the wave be translated into "noise"
