Indesit IWC 6165

Friends have had one of these machines for a couple of years. They have never cleaned the pump (pleading ignorance!) and now I am unable to unscrew the lid. It turns one quarter of a turn, water comes out but I cannot turn the lid anymore or pull the lid out. Suggestions would be helpful.

Remove pump. That's attached to it and clear pump or break off the filter cap and buy a new one.
